With over 2.8 million residents, it is the most populous city in the Midwestern United States and the third most populous city in the USA. Its metropolitan area, commonly named "Chicagoland," is the 26th most populous[3] in the world, home to an estimated 9.7 million people spread across the US states of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.[4][5] Chicago is the county seat of Cook County.
