Here's more. Despite the pressure to reform, CCP officials say that China will not walk down the path of Western style Capitalism. Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo commented on the matter in a speech at the NPC on Friday March 9th. [Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee]: "We must fully understand the essential differences between our system and the Western capitalist countries' systems of political power, remain sober-minded and take a firm and clear stand on major issues of principle, and unwaveringly keep to the socialist path of political development with Chinese characteristics." Wen reiterated Premier Wen Jiabao's goals of increasing domestic demand, investing in science and technology as well as cutting emissions. As a country that relies on exports of low-tech goods, decreased international demand is causing China's economy to slow down after years of double-digit growth.
