How will revenue forecast affect education?
and the university of new mexico could feel the effects... a new revenue forecast released today shows new mexico's financial outlook has weakened. officials in governor susana martinez's administration say the revenues in the upcoming budget year will be less than previously expected. economists believe much of the decline is because oil and natural gas prices are expected to be lower. the legislative finance committee expects to collect nearly 5 point 7 billion dollars in its main budget account this next fiscal year .... bringing in about minute thumbnail 12:00 pm 200-million dollars in "new money" for programs and services in the 20-13 budget. it wasn't that long ago we saw the state's budget shortfall force cuts to social service providers and education. now people say they're hoping for a change. marissa torres joins us now with our top story. marissa? antoinette- all eyes will be on laakers when they meet in january to hash out the new budget. we caught up with educators who are hopeful to say the least. this past spring the state slashed millions of dollars in education funding. that forced colleges and universities to go to students to make up the difference. cnm approved a 9 and a half percent tuition hike. and unm increased tuition by 5 and a half percent. we caught up with a high school guidance counselor who's helping kids plan ahead and find alternative ways to pay for college. she's worried what further tuition hikes could mean.
