The launch of "The Mamelodi Voice," a community newspaper created by the second-year students in the Journalism Programme at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The event coincided with the exhibition of the work of renowned photographer Ernest Cole, whose photos capture the social consequences of the political ethos that prevailed in 1960s South Africa. Cole's works were banned by the state for its moralistic critique of the harshly enforced apartheid policy. The launch of the paper kicked off with a string of spirited recitals of poems performed and written by learners of Meetse-a-Bophelo and Zakhele Primary school which appear in "The Mamelodi Voice". Professor Pippa Green, Head of the Department of Journalism at Pretoria University, then took to the stage to address the audience. Green later introduced the honourable Minister in the Presidency and former Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel, who emphasized the power of the media to redirect its focus from superficial trifles to more significant and pertinent stories which ultimately serve the community. Though it does not appear in the video, learners from the respective schools reclaimed the stage to close off proceedings with a couple of more, moving poems. Edwin Smith, director of the Mamelodi Campus of the University, was the master of ceremonies. Journalism lecturer Marenet Jordaan and Departmental secretary Lizette Du Plessis were also honoured.
